A 21-year-old Gonzales man was shot to death during a birthday party Saturday night at the White Castle Ccmmmunity Center on Bowie Street, according to Maj. Ronnie Hebert of the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office.

"We got a call at 11:57 p.m. saying that there had been one person shot and he was unresponsive," Hebert said. "He was shot twice with a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun and we believe the shooting was at close range."

"It happened at a birthday party a woman was holding for her son and I was told there was about 150 to 200 people at the time," he said. "The victim, Thailan Cutno, was standing and talking with a woman when a man rushed up to him and began hitting him with the butt of his handgun."

Hebert said Cutno was then shot twice, once in each side, with one bullet passing all the way through his body and the other lodging itself inside the Gonzales man's body.

Despite the number of people in the building, Hebert said no one has been able to give the Sheriff's Office the name of the shooter.

"We are actively working the case," Hebert said. "We definitely have eyewitnesses but as of today (Monday), we still do not know who the shooter was."

"There was mass chaos with all those people trying to get out of the building," he continued. "And while there were two officers with the White Castle Police Department in the parking lot, there was no way they could've known who the shooter was."

Hebert said if anyone has any information about the shooter, whether it be a name, a physical description or a photo or video shot with a cellphone, they should call the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office at 225-687-3553.
