Nearly $1 million in heroin seized in Covington arrest

A traffic stop on Interstate 10 in Calcasieu Parish has led to the arrest of a Northshore woman for multiple narcotics and weapons related charges. Troopers seized over $825,000 in heroin and $9,614.00 in currency. The suspect, 35-year-old Covington resident, Mai Ly Thuy Johnson, has been booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail.

The investigation began on Monday, December 4 when Deputies with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by 36-year-old Covington resident Dujuan Jerel Johnson on Interstate 10. During the course of the stop, Deputies found Johnson to be in possession of $72,600. He was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Parish jail for Money Laundering. Through investigative means, Deputies and Troopers with the Combined Anti-Drug Team (C.A.T.) Narcotics Task Force discovered evidence linking Johnson to the Covington area.

The evidence gleaned from the traffic stop was shared with Troopers from the Region I Narcotics Field Office. Through investigative means, Troopers and Deputies with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office were able to identify an apartment in the River Chase area of Covington. On Tuesday, December 5 agents went to the address and spoke with Mai Johnson, the wife of Dujuan Jerel Johnson. Mrs. Johnson granted Troopers written consent to search the apartment. During the search, agents discovered a Century Arms AK-47 Pistol, $9,614.00 in currency, approximately five grams of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, a 20 ton hydraulic press [machined to press and brand kilograms of narcotics], vacuum sealer, table top currency counter, and several other items used for the distribution and manufacture of illegal narcotics. Troopers also discovered a locked safe in the residence. Troopers obtained a search warrant for the safe. The safe was found to contain a stolen Ruger LCP .380 handgun and 3.3 kilograms of heroin with an estimated street value of $825,000.

Mai Ly Thuy Johnson was arrested and booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail for Possession with Intent to Distribute a Schedule I Controlled Dangerous Substance [heroin], Possession of Schedule I Controlled Dangerous Substance [Marijuana], Transactions Involving Proceeds from Drug Offenses, Possession of a Firearm in the Presence of a Controlled Dangerous Substance, Possession of a Stolen Firearm and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. The criminal investigation is on going and additional arrests are anticipated.
