Parish remains on standby for Nate, sandbags are available

Parish President Kenny Matassa hosted a storm briefing this morning for parish leaders. According to an official media release, Ascension is expected to experience impact from Nate beginning early Sunday Morning.

The statement states further that there is less than a 50 percent chance of tropical storm force winds, yet rainfall could gather between 1 and 3 inches.

A main concern is power outages, specifically in the case of those with medical needs. The parish encourages residents who require medical assistance during a power outage or evacuation procedure to sign up for the Ascension Parish Special Needs Registry. The parish sent out an earlier press release on Wednesday which stated that Matassa called to begin pumping operations to reduce normal water retention and rain accumulation in the New River/Bayou Francois Basin as well as the Panama Canal/Bayou Conway Basin. The statement adds that the Amite River at Port Vincent in below four feet as of the morning of October 6, and declining.

Next, Parish Utilities of Ascension in Donaldsonville is preparing for continuous operations in case of a power outage. Further, parish officials are on standby in case a hazardous weather shelter needs to be opened.

- St. Amant Fire Department Station 60 on Stringer Bridge Road

- Geismar Fire Department at 12171 Highway 73

- 5th Ward Fire Department on Highway 22

- Prairieville Fire Department at 14517 Highway 73

- Ascension Parish Warehouse on Church Street (Donaldsonville)
