This morning, Parish President Kenny Matassa hosted a meeting of local government leaders for an update on Tropical Storm Harvey.

Homeland Security Director Rick Webre reviewed the latest forecasts for potential impact to Ascension Parish. Today through Thursday, Ascension Parish may experience a slight risk of severe weather and a marginal to slight risk of flash flooding. The main threats associated with any tropical system include heavy rainfall, possibly in bands, and wind gusts.

Rainfall accumulations through Thursday could range between 4 to 10 inches.

Ascension residents who require medical assistance during a power outage or evacuation are encouraged to sign up for the Ascension Parish Medical Special Needs Registry. Call the Ascension Parish Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness at 225-621-8360 or visit www.ascensionparish.net/ohsep to register.

Public Works Director Bill Roux reviewed weekend actions and accomplishments on drainage in advance of possible impact from Tropical Storm Harvey.

Pumping operations began Thursday and occurred as needed to reduce normal water retention and rain accumulation in the New River/Bayou Francois Basin and the Panama Canal/Bayou Conway Basin. Additionally, the locks at Frog Bayou were opened Saturday morning to lower water levels in the Spanish Lake Basin, increasing capacity in the Northern part of the Parish.

The National Weather Service indicates low water levels throughout the pumping system’s protected areas.

Portable pumps will remain at Buxton Subdivision, Southwood Subdivision and Astroland Subdivision in case needed. Sandbagging operations continued throughout the weekend. If Ascension residents need sandbags, please visit any of the following locations:
