Ascension Parish President Kenny Matassa announced May 8 the “Move Ascension” transportation initiative, a multi-million dollar construction project designed to improve multiple parish transportation corridors, serving parts of the Gonzales area and North Ascension.

Drivers in Ascension Parish do a fair bit of sitting and waiting, but I want them to do a lot more moving,” said President Matassa. “Move Ascension is designed to work in collaboration with the recently announced state highway improvements to provide capacity upgrades for parish corridors that see high usage.”

The first step in Move Ascension will focus on widening and roundabouts in which the initial engineering work has been done and potential funding sources have been identified: the Roddy Road and Henry Road corridors and a connector road from Ashland Road to Edenborne Parkway. The second step will include additional projects similarly situated, which could be let by 2019.

We are moving forward with these projects with no additional cost to taxpayers,” added Matassa. The parish has budgeted $35 million to the Move Ascension initiative, including proceeds from a newly authorized bond issue and reserve funds.

More details on Move Ascension will be presented during the May meeting of the Parish Council Transportation Committee.
