At the request of the Donaldsonville Rotary Club, May 4, 2017 has been designated by the Ascension Parish government and the City of Donaldsonville as D-D Day, in honor of Sara D-D Breaux.

Of course, she is and has been the head women's gymnastics coach at LSU for the past 40 years. Her success as a coach is recognized nationwide, and her team is competing on Easter weekend for the national championship.

May 4 will begin with a mass at 10 a.m. at Ascension Catholic Church celebrated by Father Cleo Milano, a close friend of D-D, who also grew up in Donaldsonville. During the day, D-D will visit as many schools as possible to speak to assemblies of students. After the church service, there will be a police-escorted ride through town on the main streets and by the B.C. Always building, where D-D went to school.

At 6 p.m., the parish council will honor her at the meeting, and issue a proclamation in her honor. At 6:30 p.m., a reception and dinner will be held at Bernardo's. Dinner tickets are $40 each and are available at the Chamber of Commerce office at 714 Railroad Avenue.

A spokesman from Rotary has said that we as a community should certainly give D-D the recognition she justly deserves. In all of her successes as a coach, she always gives credit to the small community where she grew up and is thankful for the support of that community.

So we ask that as many people as possible come out to welcome D-D back to her home town. It will be a great day!
