The Ascension Veterans Associations (AVA) announces the opening of its 3rd Annual AVA Scholarship program.  This scholarship is in honor of area Americans and troop supporters. This scholarship focuses on individuals accomplishing exemplary civic service and patriotic ideology.  The scholarship is open to a dependent child, grandchild, or spouse of an honorably discharged veteran, current U.S. military service personnel, or service personnel who was killed while serving in the military. A current stepchild or step grandchild of an honorably discharged veteran or current U.S. military service personnel is also eligible.  This year we have opened the dependent child category to those who have an immediate family member who served or is serving (i.e. brother, sister, aunt, uncle) honorably discharged veterans.  The scholarship is open to residents of Ascension parish but may be attending school outside the parish, those who have graduated from an Ascension Parish school (public or private) or current seniors at an Ascension Parish High School (public or private). Candidates must have/had at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale.

Applications must be post marked no later than May 15, 2017.  A minimum of four (4) scholarships of $1000.00 each are projected to be awarded for the 2017-2018 academic year (subject to the number of qualifying participants). Previous applicants may reapply. Recipients will be honored and presented certification of the scholarship at the AVA’s annual Musical Tribute for Our Troops on June 16, 2017.  Current Ascension High School seniors may pick up a packet from their local high school counselors.  Other interested individuals may get more information or request application packets by contacting the Scholarship Chairman, Tanya Whitney at msgwhitney@gmail.com or calling (225) 612-0805 or (256) 656-2124.
