Update: SNAP benefits extended for purchase of hot foods

Greg Fischer

The Chief, the Weekly Citizen, and parish officials would like to clarify that unfortunately, tornado victims not already receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly food stamps) or Disaster SNAP (DSNAP) will see no added benefits from a waiver that was released February 17.

However, for those people already receiving SNAP benefits in areas affected by the tornado (Ascension, Jefferson, Livingston, Orleans, St. James, St. Tammany, and Tangipahoa), the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), has extended the program to include hot foods through March 31.

Typically, tobacco, alcohol, and hot foods intended for immediate consumption are not covered by SNAP programs.

We wish to apologize for any confusion or inconvenience. In the most recent volume of The Chief and the Weekly Citizen, it was just brought to our attention that our wording may have been somewhat misleading.
