Fire crews likely to be on scene of fire into the night

Fire crews from St. George, Gonzales and Prairieville are continuing to put out a fire that occurred earlier this morning at Southside Recycling Center off of Airline Highway in Prairieville.

Prairieville Fire Department Chief Mark Stewart said the fire started in the piles of recycled automobiles at the facility, though the cause is still unknown.

"Oil and gas are removed from the vehicles before they are put up here, but there's a lot of flammable stuff in an automobile, tires, gaskets, wiring, some seats and things in them," Stewart said. "With the strong winds we have had this morning it pushed the fire into the pile pretty quickly."

Southside Recycling is currently working on pulling the pile of cars apart so that the fire departments can continue to make sure the fire is completely extinguished.

Stewart said crews will likely be on scene until later this evening.
