Matassa bribe case to go before grand jury Nov. 15

Staff Report
Ascension Parish President Kenny Matassa

Beginning Nov. 15, 23rd Judicial District Attorney Ricky Babin will present a case involving an alleged bribe by Ascension Parish President Kenny Matassa to a grand jury at Donaldsonville’s historic courthouse at 9 a.m.

The allegations state that Matassa and Gonzales businessman Olin Berthelot bribed Gonzales City Council candidate Wayne Lawson in July to stay out of the election by offering him $1200 and a parish job.

Babin said in September that the case was slowed down following August’s flooding but would be presented to a grand jury once the investigation is complete.

Matassa’s attorney Lance Unglesby stated in a press conference shortly after taped recordings were released that it wasn’t a bribe, but rather just advice to a friend.
