Click It or Ticket Mobilization begins

The Gonzales Police Dept. wants to remind motorists toClick it or Ticket.In order to enforce the reminder. Gonzales Police Dept. will be stepping up enforcement, beginning May 23.

The efforts are part of a larger, nationalClick it or Ticket mobilization that runs May 23 to June 5. As motorists take to the roads to celebrate the long Memorial Day weekend and summer vacations - law enforcement officials across the nation will be ensuring that everyone buckles up. A grant for funding has been provided by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.

According to data released from the Dept. of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), fatalities are up nationwide for the first time in five years. In 2012, 10,335 people who were killed in motor vehicle crashes were not wearing seat belts.

"Our determination to assist in bringing down the number of deaths and serious injuries associated with people not wearing their seat belts is at an all-time high," said Gonzales Police Chief Sherman Jackson. "The increase in numbers is even all the more sad and tragic as these deaths and injuries are preventable.
