Ascension Parish President Kenny Matassa has proclaimed the month of April, 2016 as “Child Abuse Prevention Month” in Ascension Parish.

Matassa presented the proclamation to Erin Mire at the April 7 Parish Council meeting in Donaldsonville. Mire is the advocate supervisor with Child Advocacy Services (CASA) Gonzales Regional office. Mire said the Ascension Parish office of CAS served 70 children with court-appointed special advocates during the month of March.

“These are volunteers who lend their voices to children who have been silenced by abuse or neglect,” Mire said. “And there are more still waiting.”

Mire said last year 27 children in the 23rd Judicial District Court system were adopted into permanent and loving homes. She said there are more children waiting as well. Mire announced CASA will be holding their Sixth Annual Blue Run – One Mile Family Walk and 5K Race on Saturday, April 16 from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Pre- and post-race festivities will take place on the grounds of Gonzales City Hall, 120 S. Irma Blvd.

“This event helps us to raise awareness, which is highly needed, but also to celebrate the work that our outstanding CASA volunteers do, and that our community partners do by donating their time and their resources to make the work that we do possible. Our local governments have been so supportive of all of the work that we do and we are very grateful for that.”
