Recycling Road Show program cancelled, DPW to continue collection efforts

Staff Report

Ascension Parish government officials have announced that the parish’s Recycling Road Show program is cancelled due to a lack of participation, but the parish’s Recycling Center drop-off location at the Department of Public Works will continue.

The Recycling Road Show began at the Prairieville Wal-Mart as a monthly drop-off location for household recyclable materials about five years ago, said Don Hysell, parish environmental manager. Hysell said residents brought their recyclables on the first Saturday of each month.

“We were collecting four to five tons of recyclables once a month but that slowly dwindled down so we changed the pick-up schedule to once every other month,” Hysell said. “With all of the recycling services now being offered by private contractors, our numbers have been less than a ton every other month,” he said.

Hysell said the parish will continue the Recycling Center drop-off location at the Department of Public Works in Gonzales, 42077 Churchpoint Road. The Recycling Center is located just west of DPW’s main building. The Center is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. till 5 p.m., and on Saturday from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m. The center accepts cardboard boxes, newspapers, magazines, plastic bottles, aluminum cans and paperback books.
