State Troopers arrest man for vehicular homicide

     GONZALES – An arrest has been made in the single vehicle crash incident earlier this year that resulted in the death of 21-year-old Dylan Martin of Gonzales.

     On Dec. 19, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A arrested 24-year-old Jason Williams of Gonzales for vehicular homicide. 

     Troopers obtained a warrant after receiving a toxicology report indicating impairment on the part of Williams. Williams was arrested and booked into the Ascension Parish Jail for vehicular homicide.

     The accident occurred shortly after 9:30 p.m. on May 22, 2015 on U.S. 61 (Airline Highway) south of La. 621 in Ascension Parish. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 24-year-old Jason L. Williams was driving a 2005 Suzuki Forenza southbound on Airline Highway. For unknown reasons, the Suzuki ran off the roadway to the right. After leaving the roadway the vehicle struck a culvert causing it to roll several times before coming to rest on its roof.

     Martin (the front seat passenger) was unrestrained at the time of the crash and was partially ejected from the vehicle. He suffered fatal injuries as a result. Williams was properly restrained at the time of the crash. He was transported from the scene to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. At that point, impairment on his part was suspected as a possible factor, and a toxicology sample was taken from him and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Williams was then charged with careless operation.

     No further information is available regarding the updated charges.

     Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seat belt use, especially during a busy holiday. Louisiana law requires all occupants to be properly restrained regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, occupants who are properly restrained are much less likely to be seriously injured or killed in the event of a crash.
