The Weekly Citizen wins big at LPA Awards

It was a very successful 2014 for the Weekly Citizen as the newspaper won 10 awards in its respective division at the Louisiana Press Association Convention last Saturday in New Orleans.

The paper saw the most success in its editorial page, sports section and in advertising.

One of the Weekly Citizen's three first-place awards was given for Best Editorial Page. Within that award-winning editorial page, former editor DeRon Talley finished in second for Best Single Editorial for an editorial entitled "Health then Work."

The second first-place award was give to Sports Editor Kyle Riviere for Best Sports Story for an article entitled "Walking Away," about former East Ascension head basketball coach Kenny Almond leaving for Zachary.

Riviere also finished second in Best Sports Column, and the Weekly Citizen sports section finished second for Best Overall Sports Coverage.

The paper's third first-place award was given for Best Special Section, Advertising. The Weekly Citizen also placed third in that same category.

Penny Martinez, Anna McVea and Crystal Barrett also brought the paper a third-place finish for Multiple Advertiser Page.

Aanifa LeBlanc, Martine Duhe and Crystal Barrett also helped the Weekly Citizen finish third in Best Retailer Ad.

Finally, the paper was able to earn a third-place finish in General Excellence.
