Ascension Parish President Tommy Martinez proclaimed April 10 through May 2, 2015 as “Paint the Town Purple” in Ascension Parish to promote cancer awareness. President Martinez read the proclamation at the March 19 parish council meeting in Gonzales. The American Cancer Society promotes the nearly month-long series of events nationally, which last year provided more than $160 million in cancer research funding. Spokesperson Brian Janis announced the American Cancer Society will hold “Relay For Life” on Saturday, May 2, 2015 starting at 3 p.m. in the parking lot next to Cabelas in Gonzales.

“You can learn a lot about what the American Cancer Society does for us in our community, and what is available to us,” Janis said. “They do a lot of really great work, not just the funding for the research. There are things that are done in this area that help the people in the community.”
