Gonzales Police officers were dispatched in reference to a civil matter involving child custody of a ten-year old male on Dec. 20.

A grandmother, with legal custody of her grandson, was concerned for his safety, as his mother, Shannon Turner, 36, of 12522 Leslie Delaune Rd., Apartment 1, St. Amant, had begun hitchhiking with him to Lafayette after a pre-arranged visit. After hearing this news, the grandmother lost all contact with Turner.

A short while after, a woman noticed Turner and the child walking along the interstate and picked them up. Turner explained she was on her way to Shreveport to meet her ex-husband and was taking her son with her.

The woman attempted to convince Turner to return to her residence with the child, offering to transfer her there. Turner became irate, demanding the vehicle be stopped and that she and the child be let out. The woman was able to retrieve the cellular phone of the Turner’s brother and contacted him immediately, informing him that both Turner and child had been picked up by a brown, Ford F-150 travelling westbound on I-10.

The brother was later contacted by an unknown male saying the child was seen at Love’s Truckstop in West Baton Rouge Parish. The child had approached the man and was crying, stating he was alone as his mother had “gotten in to a big truck.” City of Gonzales Police Department officers immediately contacted West Baton Rouge Parish deputies, asking them to head to the location, as well as contacting the gas station attendant and asking that she keep the boy in her sight until deputies arrived.

Upon their arrival, West Baton Rouge Parish deputies secured custody of the child and found Turner on scene, walking through the parking lot. West Baton Rouge Parish deputies arrested turner for improper supervision of a minor at that time, as she had left her son unattended for at least half an hour.

Directly after, through an electronic medium, City of Gonzales Police Department officers sent a teletype to West Baton Rouge dispatch, placing a hold on Turner for kidnapping.

A detective was sent from the City of Gonzales Police Department to retrieve the minor child and bring him back to the station where he was reunited with his family.

Turner was transported back to Ascension on Monday, December 22, and transferred to the Ascension Parish Prison at that time, where she will be formally be charged with kidnapping by the City of Gonzales Police Department.
