Bruce Unangst declares candidacy for district court judge
Prairieville, LA – Bruce Unangst, a Republican, announced his entry in the race for District Judge Division C in the 23rd Judicial District, which includes the tri-parish area of Ascension, Assumption, and St. James. The Division C opening is being created by the expected candidacy of current Judge Guy Holdridge for the Court of Appeal.
Unangst, previously of Gonzales, now resides in Prairieville with his wife of 10 years, Ersalee Crawford, also an attorney. They are the proud parents of five children.
Unangst has worked on thousands of cases in the fields of civil, family, criminal, and juvenile law. "I have worked 15 years as a courtroom attorney in some of the toughest criminal cases and trials in the state. This experience as a seasoned courtroom lawyer will allow me to hit the ground running Day One on the District Court bench," Unangst said.
When called upon, Bruce Unangst has stood up for our neighborhoods and quality of life. For example, when sexually oriented businesses threatened to overrun Gonzales, Bruce joined with fellow citizens and argued for stricter zoning requirements. When Ascension voters were kept from voting in the 2011 election for Sorrento Mayor, Bruce Unangst stepped up and mounted a successful legal challenge. “That case was never about winning or losing an election,” Unangst said, “it was about giving the voters their constitutional right to vote.”
“As a life long Republican and conservative, I will fiercely protect our Constitutional freedoms, individual rights, and not allow the courtroom to become a vehicle for carrying out an extremist legislative agenda. I want to do my part in keeping our neighborhoods safe and passing on the quality of life we all enjoy to my children and yours. My proven conservative credentials will guide me on the District Court,” Unangst said.
Outside of work, Unangst and his family actively participate as members of Healing Place Church where they have been involved for fourteen years. In his spare time, you will probably find Bruce on the ball field or basketball court, as he is committed to our youth sports leagues, coaching his children in various sports.
During law school, Bruce was selected to Moot Court and finished in the top 10% of his class, all the while working his way through law school as an Appellant Clerk for the 19th Judicial District Office of Public Defender. He was immediately hired as a lawyer upon graduation, where he rose to become Section Chief, managing and training other lawyers and overseeing hundreds of legal cases each year.
Unangst has been honored to have been selected as an instructor of continuing education classes for other lawyers. Courses taught include “The Nuts and Bolts of Ethics”, “Appellate Ethics: Right Wrong, and In Between”. Bruce also organized and hosted “Forensic DNA: The Basic Principles”.
The Election is scheduled for November 4.
