Ascension Parish Veterans Memorial Park recognized by Gonzales Garden Club
GONZALES – Ascension Parish President Tommy Martinez announced this week the Gonzales Garden Club has chosen the parish’s Veterans Memorial Park as the Commercial Landscape Winner for the month of May.
“We couldn’t be more excited and proud to be chosen for this award,” said President Martinez. “We want to thank the Ascension Veterans Park Committee for their time and effort in maintaining the park along with our parish maintenance crews. Veterans Park is a special and sacred place here in Ascension Parish and the City of Gonzales. This is a place where people can come to remember and pay tribute to our veterans.”
Gonzales Garden Club President Priscilla Monson said once a month, members of the club tour homes and businesses throughout the Gonzales area looking for the best manicured pieces of property. She said there are two categories that members base their choices on, residential and commercial.
Member Barbara Guillot said Veteran’s Memorial Park, located on Irma Boulevard between the Ascension Parish Library and the Council on Aging, was chosen for the commercial category because the grounds were well-groomed.
“There are nice beds of flowers throughout the park and especially in the back,” Guillot said.
The Ascension Veterans Memorial Park will hold its annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 26, 2014 at 11:00 a.m., said Tanya Whitney, park committee chair. This year’s theme is “Honoring Ascension Parish Heroes - Celebrating Memorial Day and its Traditions.”
Whitney said the public is invited to come out on Monday to honor Ascension Parish residents who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country. In addition, all veterans and families of veterans are invited to bring out photos and mementos of their service to display that day.
Veterans service organizations have also been invited to set up on this day to provide assistance to veterans and their families. There will be refreshments provided after the ceremony.
Whitney said the park committee is taking orders for memorial bricks.
