BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo announced the birth of a baby plains zebra. He was born on Tues., July 17 and is doing well on exhibit with the herd. This baby is the 23rd zebra born at the Baton Rouge Zoo.

At birth, the plains zebra weighs around 66-76 pounds, and the male will grow to be about 4.5 feet high at the shoulder and weigh up to 800 lbs. Native to the plains of Africa, the plains zebra belongs to the family of horses known as Equidae.

Zebras are known for their striking black and white stripes. Many predators to the zebra, such as the lion or hyena, do not have color vision. The Zebra’s stripes make it difficult for predators to determine which stripes belong to which animal.
