LaHouse to host ‘Summer Saturday Open House’
The LSU AgCenter’s LaHouse Home and Landscape Resource Center will host its seasonal Saturday open house July 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The summer open house will highlight the rain, wind and flood resistant features used in building
LaHouse that make it a high performance home for the Gulf Region.
Homeowners can also see first hand how to make their current home more storm resilient by touring the new LaHouse Mobile traveling demonstration house. The small, mobile house was built by LSU biological and agricultural engineering (BAE) students as their senior design project to exhibit both new construction and existing home retrofit techniques for storm resistance and energy efficiency.
Visitors are invited to explore the many high performance home features, cut-aways, publications, special exhibit room, sustainable landscape and gardens. Experts will also be on hand to answer questions.
LaHouse’s building systems, foundation, roofing, walls, windows, doors and equipment are all fortified to protect from flood, wind or rain damage that hurricane season can bring. LaHouse showcases multiple solutions across a range of price-points, integrating durability with goals of sustainability that can be incorporated into any existing or new home and landscape.
LaHouse opens its doors one Saturday each season to accommodate those who cannot visit LaHouse during its regular business hours or who want to talk with LSU AgCenter experts. Each season’s open house showcases specific features of LaHouse that are especially useful during that particular season.
Past open houses have included a special focus on energy savings and comfort in the Winter, solar energy technologies, summer energy saving and comfort solutions for the home and a special focus on gardening in the Spring, and healthy home features in the fall.
The house is open for self-guided tours Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is located on 2858 Gourrier Avenue Baton Rouge, across from Alex Box Baseball Stadium. Extensive publications and a reference library are also available to visitors at LaHouse. Suggested donation of $5.
