Dutchtown heads to 5A quarterfinals; East Ascension falls to Acadiana

Dutchtown travels Friday to New Orleans for the Class 5A state championship tournament, while East Ascension came up short in its bid for the title.

In New Orleans, Ole Miss signee Jacob Waguespack allowed only two hits and struck out 12 in Dutchtown's 9-0 rout Monday over No. 8 seed Brother Martin at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

The No. 9 seeded Griffins will face the winner of top-seeded Barbe and No. 17 seed Catholic-Baton Rouge, whose game Monday was suspended due to rain. The winner of that game meet DTHS in the 5A quarterfinals Friday at Turchin Stadium on the campus of Tulane University.

Lucas Shipman hammered in two runs, while Colin Delaune went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Robbie Pedorsky went 1-for-3 with a two-bagger for the Griffins.

Troy Lewis scored the opening run off a Mason Nickens line drive to left. Lewis led off in the first with a one-bagger to center field. A Grant McCrory triple to left drove home Waguespack in the third, after the 6-foot-5 pitcher reached base on walk.

DTHS padded its lead in the sixth on a wild pitch and exploded for six more in the seventh to take tihe win.

The Dutchtown defense looked tougher than a $3.00 steak. DTHS stopped Daniel Lahare's solid line drive to left came up short after a diving catch by Collin Delaune.

No. 30 seed East Ascension (18-18) came up short 12-6 against  Acadiana after the visitors from Lafayette pulled from a 3-3 tie.

A Devin Spelligene two-run double put the Spartans on the board in the second frame.

Jace Fairchild had four hits for the Spartans.

Acadiana took a 3-2 lead in the fifth on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly, but Blake Petite tied the score once again when he reached home on an error at first.

The Spartans had a three-run rally in the sixth, including a run off a Blake Pettie bases-loaded walk.
