Storm causes damage in Priairievlle

A home in the Silverstone Subdivision near Prairieville suffered extensive damage during a mid-morning storm that swept through the area.

The Ascension Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is awaiting word from the National Weather Service on whether a damaging wind storm this morning qualified as a tornado.

Numerous homes sustained damages in Prairieville, but no injuries were reported, according to Lester Kenyon, Ascension Parish Public Information Officer.

Damage was reported along Duplessis Road in Priarieville, going up to Hwy. 930 along Henry Road near Prairieville Middle School.

The school closed at noon as crews worked to clear debris following the storm.

Some of the most extensive damage occurred near the Silverstone Subdivision area.

The storm was part of a slow moving low pressure system that brought heavy rainfall and tornadoes to parts of Texas.

Sand and sandbags are available for residents, Kenyon said.

Four locations are available for pickup of the sandbags:

--St. Amant Volunteer Fire Department, 44465 Stringer Bridge Road

--7th District Fire Station, 13337 North Hwy. 44, Gonzales

--Old 7th District Fire Station, 13398 Roddy Road, Gonzales

--Ascension Parish Department of Public Works, 725 Church Street, Donaldsonville.

Residents are asked to bring their own shovels to bag sand, Kenyon said.

The sandbags will be available until further notice.
