St. Amant High's Gabby Felps is well known around campus for her hard work and dedication. After all, she plays four sports - softball, basketball, track and cross country.

With Wednesday marking the start of the NCAA's early signing period, Felps took the opportunity to take a major step toward continuing her softball career at the next level. She signed with the University of Louisiana-Lafayette for the 2012-13 season, joining a class of six new players.

Primarily a third baseman, Felps has earned four letters in softball at St. Amant. She was the 2009 Rookie of the Year, 2010 and 2011 NFCA Academic All-American, 2010 Southern Star Showcase MVP, and Wendy’s Heisman Award Nominee.

Felps led her travel softball team in runs (44), walks (19), and stolen bases (16).

Her teammates from the Gators softball squad joined her Wednesday evening in the locker room for a signing ceremony.

"I have always wanted to play softball at the next level and now I am getting the change to live my dream," she said.

Her coach, Scott Nielson, credited Felps for setting the bar high in both athletics and academics.

"I think her best softball is ahead of her," Nielson said Wednesday. "I know she's going to represent herself well in her senior year and beyond."
