Sheriff’s Office and State Police investigate death
Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley is reporting that in the early morning hours of Saturday, September 3, 2011, his office responded to Highway 42 in the area of Old Galvez Town Trailer Park in Prairieville after receiving reports of a female lying in the roadway.
As protocol on state highways the Louisiana State Police responded and took over the investigation as the initial investigation appeared to possibly be a pedestrian hit-n-run. LSP’s investigation revealed that a passing motorist had located the female lying in the roadway and had stopped to render aid when the female faintly asked the motorist for “Help,” then took several faint breaths and stopped breathing. Seconds later an oncoming motorist ran over the female’s legs. This motorist also stopped at the scene.
Acadian arrived on scene, began CPR and transported the female to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. She was identified as 26 year old Melissa Nicole Barrilleaux,
During the course of the investigation Ascension Parish detectives began a joint investigation with the Louisiana State Police into this death. Authorities learned from the coroner that Barrilleauxs blood alcohol content indicated she was heavily intoxicated.
Ascension authorities had learned Barrilleaux had been staying with family in Old Galvez Town Trailer Park prior to her death. Members of the family told authorities that prior to her death Barrilleaux had been consuming alcohol and pills.
At this point of the investigation the cause of death is unknown. However, an autopsy has been ordered by the coroner’s office in order to determine the exact cause of death.
