Special Needs Spotlight: Emily Thompson

Charlotte Guedry
Local author Ed Braud, and his wife Audrey, hosted a demonstration on?Saturday morning where Dutch Oven biscuits were the theme of the day.

Meet the Thompson Family, Dad-Scott, Mom-Stephanie, Sister-Kinley, and 10-year-old Emily.  Emily was born with a chromosomal abnormality. Specifically, she has a micro-deletion in chromosome 8q.  Emily was born with a cleft of the hard and soft palate, low muscle tone, and many other mid-line birth defects. She has had over 17 surgeries. Emily also has mild/moderate mental disabilities.

The low muscle tone prevented Emily from walking until she was 3 years old, and it continues to hinder her physical abilities today. Although Emily can do most things that other kids do (walking, swimming, climbing), they are difficult for her, and make her tire easily. Emily also has sensory integration disorder. The chaos, lights, sounds, and action of many activities make Emily uncomfortable. Kidz Kove would provide a place for Emily to slide and play without the pressure of having to keep up with peers.  When she gets tired, she would have a calm place to sit and read her book.

Emily loves to be around and meet new people, but sometimes this can be challenge because of cognitive and physical disabilities. Kidz Kove would help Emily have a place to meet new friends that share common interests.  She would have a place to sit and visit with other children who understand her. Emily enjoys playing with her 2-year-old sister, her younger cousins, wants to talk about the zoo or fire trucks or her dog, Benny Carwash.  Kidz Kove would provide Emily with a place to be herself without judgment from peers or parents who do not understand her disabilities.

Project Kidz Kove is making amazing leaps and bounds toward their goal of building an all accessible playground in Gonzales. More than 20,000 children in Ascension and the surrounding parishes will benefit from this ADA approved play space. Not only for children with physical disabilities, this park covers it all, complete with educational panels and quiet areas for children that are easily over stimulated. Donations may be made to Project Kidz Kove at: P.O. Box 179, Brittany, LA 70718, or for more information, please call 921-0380.
