Volunteers needed for Bayou Manchac Trash Sweep

Staff reports

Following the removal of a major litter blockage on Bayou Manchac by Ascension Parish Crews on Wedneday, the Bayou Manchac Group (www.bayoumanchac.org) is asking volunteers to participate in an emergency 2-day trash sweep to capture the remaining litter this weekend (August 20-21, from 8 a.m. - evening) before it enters the Amite River and Lakes Maurepas and Pontchartrain.

Volunteers can meet near the Hwy 73 bridge at Bayou Manchac anytime Saturday or Sunday.

Supplies and a few canoes will be available, so volunteers are strongly encouraged to bring their own boats or canoes since this litter can only be reached from the water.

Contact Jonathan Scott (773-3902) for additional information and boat launch locations or check the facebook page at www.bayoumanchac.com.

Bayou Manchac is a State Historic & Scenic Waterway separating East Baton Rouge Parish from Iberville and Ascension Parishes and drains much of metropolitan Baton Rouge.
