Gauthier & Amedee tops Emporia in American Legion tournament

MINDEN – Ascension Parish-based Gauthier & Amedee took a 7-5 victory over Emporia, Kan., at the American Legion Mid-South Regional Tournament opener on Thursday.

Baton Rouge Community College’s Jesse Buratt, a former Dutchtown High standout, hit a three-run home run and earned a save in relief to help secure the victory.

St. Amant High pitcher Stephen Cardinale, who relieved starter Chris Boutwell (formerly of Dutchtown), earned the victory.

St. Amant’s Tanner Sheets and Matt Willis, formerly of Dutchtown, each had two RBIs in the winning effort.

Buratt finished with three hits, while Sheets had two hits.

Emporia, the Kansas state champion, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first two innings. In the third, Willis hit a two-RBI?double and later scored on a hit from Sheets, giving the Ascension team a 3-2 lead.

After a solo home run from Emporia’s Jacob Loucks, Sheets added another RBI hit in the seventh. Buratt followed in the eighth with a three-run home run. He also struck out two batter in relief.

Gauthier & Amedee, coached by Dutchtown assistant Justin Morgan, has players from Dutchtown, East Ascension and St. Amant high schools. They entered the tournament on a five-gave winning streak.

The best teams from a seven-state region arrived in Minden for the summer tournament. Champions come from Louisiana, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi.

The winner of the tournament will advance to North Carolina to play in the American Legion World Series, which will be televised on ESPN3.
