Area volunteer honored in education field

Jennifer Lilly, of Ascension Parish, has been named Volunteer of the Year by the Associated Professional Educators of Louisiana, also called A+PEL. She, along with 19 other volunteers from across Louisiana, was honored at the Governor’s Mansion in Baton Rouge on June 8th.

Lilly was nominated for her service at Prairieville Middle School where Diane Gautreau is principal. Her volunteer duties include managing the school’s Spirit and Supply store, writing the Partners in Education newsletter and serving on the Copy Cats Committee. She also organizes the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon, along with field trips and field day.

Lilly grew up in Texarkana, Ark., and graduated from the University of Arkansas with a degree in Chemical Engineering. She moved to Prairieville in 1995, and is married to Bruce Lilly. She and Bruce have three children, Nathan, Hanna and Rebecca.

“Volunteering at Prairieville Middle means being willing to serve others, including teachers, students, and other parents,” Lilly said. “Volunteers make Prairieville Middle better!”   

A+PEL members throughout Louisiana nominated the 20 recipients of this year’s Volunteer of the Year awards, which included recipients from Ascension, Caddo, Calcasieu, Jefferson Davis, Lafayette, Livingston, Morehouse, Orleans, Ouachita, Plaquemines, Rapides, Richland, St. Mary, Terrebonne and Union Parishes.

A+PEL is the association for educators committed to improving education for students. By focusing on professional development, teacher advocacy and excellence in education, A+PEL empowers Louisiana's students to become lifelong learners and productive citizens. A+PEL believes teaching is a profession and concentrates its efforts on education issues and building capacity for teaching and learning.
