LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne leads team in All-SEC preseason honors

Staff reports
Morris Claiborne (17) and Tyrann Mathieu (14) celebrate an interception by Patrick Peterson (7) last season. Peterson, one of the most decorated players in LSU history, went fifth in the NFL Draft to to the Arizona Cardinals. Claiborne and Mathieu, both honored on the preseason All-SEC team, will be called on to lead the defensive backfield in 2011-12.

BATON ROUGE – LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne has been tabbed as a pre-season first-team All-Southeastern Conference selection as voted on by the league's coaches, the conference office announced on Thursday.

Claiborne is one of seven Tigers listed on one of the three pre-season all-conference teams voted on by the league's coaches, but he's LSU's only first-team selection. LSU had four players listed on the second-team and two third-team selections. Five of LSU's seven selections are on the defensive side of the ball.

LSU players on the second-team include wide receiver Rueben Randle, defensive end Barkevious Mingo, linebacker Ryan Baker and cornerback Tyrann Mathieu. Offensive tackle Alex Hurst and defensive end Sam Montgomery received third-team honors.

Claiborne, a junior, led LSU and ranked among the league leaders with five interceptions a year ago. A pre-season All-America selection going into 2011, Claiborne has also been named to the Thorpe Award Watch list as the nation's top defensive back.
