Dancing for a Cause dancers ready for the night

Russell?Graham and his dance partner, Jewell Reid, have fun during their Tuesday night rehearsal. Graham and Reid are performing an East Coast Swing routine to the classic Prince hit, “Baby I’m a Star.” Graham is looking forward to the night, and has been pleased with his progress. “Rehearsals are going very well,” he said.

Dancers have been practicing for Saturday’s Dancing for a Cause event, and one hopeful certainly has his eyes on the prize.

Russell?Graham, a State Trooper with the Louisiana State Police Troop?A, is looking forward to showcasing his moves along with his dance partner Jewell Reid.

“Rehearsals are going very well,” said Graham. “I told Jewell from the beginning that she had her work cut out for her, and she really did. I had no rhythm, and now she has me dancing without tripping over my feet. I’ve learned so much and she has opened my eyes to what professional dancers put themselves through as well as the dedication it takes to get it right.”

Graham was honored to be asked to take part in the event, as the cause is one he feels is important to the parish.

“It’s such a wonderful cause,”?he said. “It’s really important that these programs are available to the people of Ascension.”

The event is held Saturday night at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center, with a meal beginning at 6 p.m., and entertainment following at 7 p.m.

Irma Thomas is scheduled to perform, along with the multitude of local celebrities chosen to take part.

Graham isn’t worried abut the competition, though, seeing it as a time to make a challenge of his own.

“The competition is fierce. I conducted a safety demonstration for the kids at Color Wheel earlier this week, and Jodi Loar tried to trip me!  But it's ok, I think I got into her head a little! Oh, and don't think Jewell and I aren't getting all the practice in that we can. Scott Banker had better bring his magic dancin' shoes on July 9.”

All money raised from the event goes to the ARC of East Ascension to support the many programs they have on offer to those with special needs, and their families, within Ascension Parish.

Graham struts his stuff while acting out a bit from his routine. He has been getting in as much rehearsal time as he can, as “The competition is fierce,”?he said.”
