Area Scouts help with storm drain markings

Staff reports

Boy scouts, girl scouts and cub scouts with the Cypress Chauve District will be marking storm drains parish wide this weekend with information medallions as part of a service project to increase storm water drainage awareness.

“Again, our scouting community is stepping up to help the citizens of Ascension Parish,” said Parish President Tommy Martinez. “Getting the word out in any form about the importance of cleaning up our waterways will make a huge difference for generations to come.”

The storm drain marking program is part of a public outreach effort called the Stormwater Management Program. The Stormwater Management Program is mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The scouts will work closely with Ascension Parish Department of Public Works employees to attach 400 metal information medallions on subdivision storm drains that dump into the Amite River Basin, and curb and gutter developments on Swamp Road and Perkins Road.

The four-inch medallions are embossed with the slogan “No Dumping, Only Rain in the Drain” to remind parish residents that storm drains connect to local waterways and that dumping will pollute those waters.
