7th Annual EASL?Saltwater Challenge set for July 15-16 in Grand Isle
The East Ascension Sportsman’s League’s annual “Terry Melancon Memorial Saltwater Challenge” had to be cancelled last year because of the oil spill. But it’s back this year.
The Grand Isle beaches are open again and so is the fishing. The dates are set for July 15 and 16.
EASL has rented a beachfront camp in Grand Isle for the weekend called the “Sassy Seagull.” It’s located about one-half mile past the Grand Isle Bridge, right on the beach and right across the street from Gulf Stream Marina and Ricky’s Motel.
EASL members are welcome to stay. To reserve a spot in the camp, contact Wesley Johnson at 225-324-3035.
Entry fees for the rodeo are $10 per person with 100 percent payback to the winners in six different fish categories. The “Challenge” is open to all EASL members.
If you or someone you know are not members but want to join in on this fun event, $10 annual EASL memberships can be purchased at the Friday evening social, prior to the rodeo.
Membership and the $10 rodeo entry fee gets two free suppers Friday and Saturday evening at camp “Therapy,” located farther down the island.
The friendly competition begins at daylight Saturday morning and the weigh-in is at 3 p.m. that afternoon. This new tradition is getting bigger and better every year.
“We had to cancel this event last year because of the oil spill. This year, the beaches look better than ever, and the fishing has been outstanding. We’re excited!” said Keith Saucier, one of the event’s organizers.
