LSU's Tiger Stadium, new Alex Box among top 100 sports venues

BATON ROUGE - LSU's Tiger Stadium and new Alex Box Stadium have been ranked two of the world's top 100 sports venues by, a professional business website and blog, it was announced earlier this week.

Tiger Stadium was listed 23rd in the world and ranked as the second-best college football venue. New Alex Box Stadium, which opened in 2009, was the only college baseball venue to make the list coming in at No. 85.

Alex Box Stadium ranked higher than seven Major League Baseball ballparks on the list, including San Diego's Petco Park (100), New York's Citi Field (99), Washington's Nationals Park (96), Denver's Coors Field (92), Houston's Minute Maid Park (91) and Pittsburgh's PNC Park (90).

Green Bay's storied Lambeau Field topped the list of rankings.

The rankings were derived from a three-category system by The first category was architecture, ambiance and aesthetics. It critiques what every stadium brings to the table structurally. Older grounds may have outdated architecture, but they make up for that with an environment that makes watching the sport even better.

The second category was "history." It is an aggregate score of the historical importance of the team, the games played at the stadium and the venue itself. The final category was "passion." How much do the fans care about the team who plays there?

Tiger Stadium will open its gates to LSU football for the 87th year this fall. The eighth-largest on-campus stadium in the nation, "Death Valley" seats 92,400 fans and has ranked in the top 10 in national attendance for 45 consecutive seasons. Since head coach Les Miles' arrival in Baton Rouge, the Tigers are 37-6 overall in "Death Valley" and 29-1 in Saturday night games.

Alex Box Stadium is one of the finest venues in all of baseball, seating a comfortable 10,150 fans and featuring state-of-the-art resources that set Tiger baseball apart from the rest of America. In the New Box, LSU enjoys 6,000 additional square-feet of locker and meeting room space, new batting cages and fan-friendly amenities on the concourse and outside the stadium.
