LHSAA to host first-ever cheer and dance state championships

Staff reports

BATON ROUGE – The LHSAA recently announced its plans to showcase Louisiana's cheer and dance teams in its inaugural cheerleading state championships.

More than 100 attendees were on hand during the Second Annual Cheerleading Coaches Clinic in Baton Rouge to hear Becky French, LHSAA Public Relations Specialist, announce plans for the LHSAA to host the first-ever LHSAA State Cheer and Dance Competition.

“I am very excited about the direction the LHSAA is taking in recognizing cheerleading in Louisiana. While it is not a sanctioned sport, we are still able to offer services and safety education to cheer coaches, and our efforts have been very well received,” said French.

The Championships will be held on Dec. 3 at the Lake Charles Convention Center. Awards will be given out based upon the number of squads participating in each of the nine competition divisions, including the Freshman and Jr. Varsity Divisions, Small, Medium, Large, and Super Varsity Divisions, Small and Large Co-ed Varsity, and Non-Tumbling and Non-Building Varsity Divisions. Visit the “Spirit Group” section on the LHSAA website to view a complete division breakdown. It is important to note that if a team wishes to compete for a bid to UCA or NCA Nationals, then they must follow the division breakdown for those respective associations.

Additionally, The LHSAA will be offering a Cheerleading Coach of the Year Award, as well as a Spirit of Louisiana Community Service Award, given to the squad that most exemplifies community service, academics, school athletic support, and spirit raising activities.

A breakdown of all competition divisions, including eligibility, registration, regulations, and awards will be available LHSAA website under the “Spirit Group” section at a later date.

The LHSAA is a private entity that provides and regulates interscholastic athletic programs that promote fair and equitable competition among its member schools that is in the best interest of the student athlete.
