Hunts prisoners assist with sandbagging

Prisoners from Hunts Correctional Center work on lining the levee with sandbags.

Prisoners from Hunts Correctional Center worked Thursday to fill sandbags.

Sandbags were filled as part of an effort to raise a stretch of the levee system near the Sunshine Bridge along River Road. The area is currently at 34 ft., but projections call for an increase to 36 ft.

The prisoners are also filling the bags to assist with the flooding expected in neighboring Assumption Parish.

As a precaution, the levee's height is being increased by two feet.
