Arrest made in Prairieville hit and run death

Louisiana State Police, with the assistance of the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, arrested a Prairieville woman on?Thursday following an investigation into a hit and run fatal crash. 

Troopers were called to the scene of the hit and run on?Airline Hwy. south of Hwy 73.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a white Mazda struck Willie Daniels, 44, of Gonzales.  Daniels was pronounced deceased by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office on the scene. 

Crime Scene Unit personnel from the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab processed the scene and collected physical evidence. Troopers and Deputies were able to determine that there was damage to the Mazda, including a missing driver’s side mirror, shattered driver’s side window, and damage to the left front area of the vehicle.  They followed leads throughout the day and later learned that the vehicle involved in the crash was a 2011 Mazda 3. 

Further investigation revealed that Joni Cooley, 34, of Prairieville was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Troopers arrested Cooley and booked her into the Ascension Parish Prison, where she is charged with felony hit and run. 

The vehicle has been taken to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for processing. 

The case remains under investigation, and additional charges may be forthcoming pending the outcome of the investigation.
