East Ascension falls short at Scotlandville

BATON?ROUGE – A?late Scotlandville surge held off East Ascension Friday night in the opening round of the Class 5A boys basketball playoffs.

Second-seeded Scotlandville took an 87-71 win over No. 31 East Ascension as Cleveland Thomas scored a game-high 29 points, while Levie Wright added 27.

Jamal Steward led East Ascension with 20 points, while Curtis Watts and DeAundre Smith added 18 each. Devonte Fisher finished with 11 to round out the Spartans scoring in double figures.

East Ascension hit eight three-pointers, as Smith led the way with four. Watts and Fisher each had two.

District 5-5A champion Scotlandville went on a 17-4 run with less than four minutes remaining to claim the win.

Scotlandville held a 40-36 lead at halftime.

The Hornets eventually separated from the Spartans in the second half, first with a 10-4 run that made it 50-40.

East Ascension fought back with a surge of its own. Fisher and Smith hit three-pointers to help the Spartans in a 13-4 run.

East Ascension finished with a 19-14 record.
