Pedestrian killed on I-10 in Gonzales

Staff reports

Louisiana State Police Troop A is investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian last night in Ascension Parish on Interstate 10 eastbound near Hwy. 30.

The investigation began shortly before midnight when a 2001 Dodge Caravan struck a black male in the right-hand eastbound lane on Interstate 10.

The pedestrain has been identified as Royric D. Perry, 29, from Baton Rouge.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Perry was already lying in the right travel lane when he was struck by the van.

Troopers believe that he had already been struck by at least one vehicle on Interstate 10 eastbound in the left lane.

The driver of the Caravan, Venus Richmond, 48, of Metairie, voluntarily submitted a breath sample to Troopers, which confirmed that she had no detectable alcohol in her system.

Mrs. Richmond and her passenger, Gregory Richmond, 50, of Metairie, were both properly restrained at the time of the crash and neither sustained injuries.

They contacted 911 immediately upon coming to a stop on the shoulder of the interstate and cooperated fully with investigating Troopers.

Perry was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner.

The crash remains under investigation, and anyone with information regarding the crash or Mr. Perry is encouraged to contact Louisiana State Police Troop A at (225) 754-8500.
