Ascension tops list for population growth

Ascension was at the top of a census list, as the suburbs of Baton Rouge were among Louisiana's fastest growing parishes over the last decade.

Parishes hardest-hit by hurricanes Katrina and Rita had the largest overall reported losses, according to the 2010 Census data released on Thursday.

According to the data:

-Ascension and Livingston parishes had the largest percentage of growth, more than 39 percent.

-Orleans, Cameron and St. Bernard Parishes had the largest percentage drops. Orleans lost 29 percent of its residents, Cameron was hit with a 32 percent drop and St. Bernard lost nearly 50 percent of its residents.

-East Baton Rouge Parish is now Louisiana's largest parish, with more than 440,000 residents.
