Edwin Edwards was released from federal prison Thursday morning, after serving eight-and-a-half years of his 10-year sentence for bribery.

A transfer order was approved earlier this week, allowing Edwards, 83, to be released from the federal detention center in Oakdale, La. and report to a halfway house  in Baton Rouge.

It has been reported that Edwards will report to the Ecumenical House three times a week. If approved by the Bureau of Prisons, he will be allowed to live with relatives during his 6-month probation period.

The charges against the former governor were in relation to the obtaining of Louisiana riverboat casino licenses.
