St. Amant High FFA needs your help and it will not cost you a dime

Dina Parker

The St. Amant High School Agriscience and FFA program have applied for a chance to win a $50,000 Pepsi Refresh Grant. Yes a grant! This means the money will not have to be paid back and money will not come from our taxes!  I know what you are thinking, what will they do with all that money?  Well in an effort to increase Agriculture awareness within this community as well as the skills of our students, the St. Amant Agriscience program, FFA chapter and Alumni plan to construct a student/community outdoor Agrisicence teaching facility.

This facility will house and care for a few small animals but mostly will be used as a teaching facility. Plans include a lab and pens for animals to be brought in to be used in Veterinary Assistant program and Agriscience classes.

The facility will also be used to implement service learning projects for all students enrolled in the Agriculture Department which include students in Welding, Carpentry, Electricity, Horticulture/Landscaping, Agriscience I, II, III and Veterinary Assistant. Square foot gardens, which are more manageable for the high school students, will be use to grow and experiment with different types of crops.

The crops will be marketed in a community farmer’s market open once or twice a week. An area for the public to visit and interact with animals and vegetation through community days, a farmer’s market and school field trips is also included in the overall goal.
