A 19-year-old student died at the River Parishes Community College  Ascension Campus early Friday morning while participating in a training class in the electric line technician program.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. Authorities were contacted immediately, and classes were dismissed at 9 a.m., according to a release from the school.

The student was identified as Joshua Wallace, who lived in Prairieville on Muddy Creek Road.

The accident happened shortly before 9 a.m., according to Sorrento Police.

“The entire college community is saddened by this tragic loss,” said River Parishes Community College Chancellor Joe Ben Welch. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the student’s family at this time.”

Members of the RPCC community in need of counseling assistance were encouraged to contact the Ascension Campus for counseling available beginning Nov. 1, when classes resume.

Welch said the school would provide counseling services for as long as it is needed.

Grief counselors will be on site to offer student and staff support, beginning at 7 a.m., the college said in its release.

The incident is still under investigation by the Sorrento Police Department as well as the RPCC administration.

The electric line technician program has been suspended pending completion of the investigation.
