SALT expo for seniors set Nov. 16

Staff Report

Preparations are underway for the annual Ascension Parish Seniors and Lawmen Together Advisory Council Crime Prevention Expo to be held Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 11 a.m. at the Gonzales Recreation Center.

Informational booths will be available for participants to learn more about the services that are available to the older adult community. Elderly protected services, nursing home representatives and retired and senior volunteer  programs are just some of the areas that will be represented.

“It is our hope that through this Crime Prevention Expo we can increase awareness of the types of crimes older adults are most likely to face, and also increase their ability to prevent these crimes,” said Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley. “The target audience is to all Ascension Parish residents 60 years and older.”

The S.A.L.T. Council was formed in 1992 along with the AARP and the chiefs of police, and has successfully continued under the administration of Sheriff Jeff Wiley.

S.A.L.T. meets every two months at the Gonzales Courthouse to discuss issues concerning senior citizens.
