Toe Tappin’ Senior Soc Hop brings crowd out

Folks gather for the first dance during the Friday, July 23 Senior Soc Hop held at Lamar-Dixon. For their dancing and listening pleasure, they were entertained by the “Throw Together Band.”

During an interview at the Senior Soc Hop Friday with Ascension Parish Recreation Director Garney Gautreau, the spearheader of the monthly event, smiles as he expresses how the it has become so successful.

When Parish President Tommy Martinez asked him more than two years ago to come up with something for the senior citizens to do monthly, it was no question, a Senior Soc Hop would be the answer.

Gautreau said the first event brought out 40-60 seniors. Now the monthly event held on the fourth Friday of each month at Lamar-Dixon entertains more than 400 participants. For the Christmas dance, it’s expected that more than 600 will attend.

He added, the event couldn’t be possible without the volunteers and sponsors.

After the chicken and spaghetti dinner, salad, soft drinks, water, along with dessert were served the “Throw Together Band,” performed by volunteers, took the stage.

The folks started toe tapping, as they waited for the next song to bring them to the dance floor, while some just listened and sang along.

Gautreau was recently asked by an out-of-parish senior lady if her dancing friends could attend the Ascension Parish event? He jokingly but seriously said, I don’t mind your group attending, but just buy some gas or shop here while you’re in the parish. No problem she said we did buy gas last time.

The next Senior Soc Hop, held from 1-3 p.m. will be Friday, Aug. 27.
