Oil cleanup crews traversing the beach with shovels, rakes and plastic bags to collect bits of oil that came ashore on the island last week.

With no fishing and swimming allowed in the Gulf of Mexico, Memorial Day on Grand Isle was far from the popular tourist destination that

it normally is.

Just a few hundred yards inward, across the main island highway, area residents on Memorial Day unveiled a mock graveyard on the ridiculing BP Petroleum company and the federal government for letting oil reach Louisiana’s coastline.
