Justice of the Peace employee arrested for felony theft

Staff reports

An employee of the Third Justice of the Peace Court was arrested by the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office and charged with felony theft by fraud Monday.

Chief Deputy Tony Bacala said an investigation began May 17 when Justice of the Peace John C. Hebert alleged that his clerk, Karen Tomlinson, 42, of 45114 Lake Martin Road, St. Amant, stole money from his office

The stolen funds  were paid to the office by individuals to cover NSF checks, administrative fees and associated court costs, Hebert alleged.

After an internal audit by Hebert, the amount stolen amounted to just over $1,000, Bacala said.

Tomlinson was booked on one count of felony theft by fraud and released from the Ascension Parish Jail in Donaldsonville after posting a $3,500 bond set by Judge Thomas Kliebert.
