West Monroe eliminates East Ascension

WEST?MONROE – East Ascension fell to West Monroe, 7-2, Wednesday night in the opening round of the Class 5A state playoffs.

Ninth-seeded West Monroe took a four-run lead through four innings as it topped the visiting No. 24 seed.

The Spartans tallied seven hits, as Austin Todd and John DeArmond each finished 2-for-3 with a double.

West Monroe’s Steven Smith (9-3) held East Ascension scoreless until the fifth inning, when the Spartans notched the first of its two runs.

West Monroe (20-13) scored runs in every inning except the third. The Rebels notched two runs in the bottom of the sixth to go into the seventh with some insurance.

Despite the lead, the Spartans tried to put together a rally in the top of the seventh. Smith gave up three hits and hit a batter to load the bases. But the tying run never made it to the batter’s box as the Rebels were able to breathe a sigh of relief  on a foul-ball catch at the left field wall.

The Rebels then picked up the last out on a pop fly behind second base.

Both teams had their share of errors in the game. While each team had three errors on the night, East Ascension’s proved to be costly.

West Monroe also turned two double plays in the game to keep East Ascension at bay.

East Ascension finished 16-19 as Alec Singletary took the loss.

West Monroe will travel to face No. 8 Zachary in the second round. Zachary topped Airline 3-0 Wednesday.
