Byrd edges St. Amant, 2-1

Staff reports

SHREVEPORT — The St. Amant Gators suffered a heartbreaking end to their season Wednesday as Byrd claimed a 2-1 extra-inning win in the Class 5A state playoff opening  round.

Byrd catcher Jacob Duke hit the game-winning single with two outs in the botto mof the eighth inning to score courtesy runner Matthew vetter from second base.

St. Amant (19-16) had intentionally walked Thad Bray to get to Duke.

Much of the game was a pitchers’ duel featuring St. Amant senior Dylan Delaune and Byrd’s Matt Sharp. Each of the pitchers went the distance, as Byrd finished with seven hits and St. Amant six.

St. Amant scored in the second inning when senior Kahn Petite hit a sacrifice fly to right. Senior Jacob Templet was on base with a lead-off walk.

Delaune followed with a hard grounder that bounced into center field to put runners on the corners.

The 13th-seeded Yellow Jackets (23-14) will face No. 4 seed Dutchtown, St. Amant’s Ascension Parish and District 6-5A rival, in the second round.
