East Ascension's run for title ends in quarterfinals

SULPHUR – East Ascension bowed out of the state tournament in a one-run, eight-inning decision Friday.

No. 7 seed Zachary took a 2-1 win over the No. 2 Spartans in the Class 5A quarterfinal game at Frasch Park.

The first seven innings was a stalemate. Zachary scored first in the top of the eighth inning. Alyssa Eiswirth reached base on a single, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Keely McDaniel. Eiswirth then scored from third on an error.

East Ascension had two base runners in the bottom of the eighth, but Zachary pitcher Jessie Browne retired the Spartans to end the game.

East Ascension’s Brooke Courville hit a one-out single, then Tiffany Robinson followed with a double off the left-field wall to put runners on second and third with two outs.

Neither team could get much going in the first five innings.

Zachary scored first when Katie Brown brought home Alex Stephens on an RBI?double.

East Ascension went on to tie the game. Bailey Landry reached on an error to start the inning off, then moved all the way to third before scoring on a passed ball.

East Ascension’s lone senior, Colgate signee Rachel LeCoq, retired 14 of 15 batters between the second and sixth innings. She struck out nine in that stretch.

LeCoq also recorded a hit for the Spartans.
